College of Law Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic Makes Front Page of Idaho Statesman

Barbara LockThe College of Law Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic, directed by Barbara Lock, was profiled in a front page story in the Idaho Statesman on November 29, 2013. The article featured stories about some of the clients helped by the clinic, students, and Professor Lock. The clinic provides help to taxpayers who find themselves in a difficult situation with the IRS but without the money to hire a lawyer. One client featured in the article was a woman whose husband had abandoned the family. The client filed her taxes as head of household claiming the earned income tax credit. She was unaware that her husband had also filed as head of household. The clinic helped her successfully claim the exemption. Read the full Idaho Statesman article Tax clinic a godsend when IRS is calling.

Students in the Tax Clinic represent low-income taxpayers from Idaho, Washington, Montana, Utah, Wyoming and Nevada with the Internal Revenue Service in a wide range of controversies, ranging from initial notices and problems receiving refunds, appeals, Tax Court litigation, and offers in compromise. This clinic is funded by a matching grant from the IRS and has been in operation at the College of Law for eight years. For more information about the clinic, contact Barbara Lock, Director Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic, at block@uidaho.edu.

College of Law Receives Alumni Major Gifts from Law Advisory Council Members in 2013

Donald Burnett PhotoSpecial thanks go out to the College of Law Advisory Council (LAC) current and emeritus members for their support in 2013. Not only do these alumni and friends give of their time and talent, but many also made significant gifts to the College of Law in 2013. The LAC collectively contributed to establish the Donald L. Burnett, Jr. Law Scholarship Endowment. This fund will provide scholarships for the College of Law to recruit the best and brightest students to our law school. The LAC created this scholarship fund to honor the service and commitment made by Don Burnett during his tenure as dean of the College of Law.

We also received major gifts to the College of Law at year’s end by members of the LAC. Ed Ahrens ‘71 and Ed’s firm Ahrens DeAngeli Law Group made a $125,000 gift to support the College of Law program in Boise. This gift will help us move our program forward in the Treasure Valley and to complete work on the Idaho Law Learning Center tenant specific renovation. This gift will help us as we move closer to our anticipated occupancy of the building in fall 2015.

Tore Beal ’93 and Mike Gwartney ’63 (Business) made a $50,000 gift to benefit the College of Business and Economics and the College of Law. The gift to the College of Law will also support our program in Boise. We thank Tore for her service as the chair of the Law Advisory Council for the past two years and for her support to the College of Law in so many ways.

We thank all of our current and emeritus members of the Law Advisory Council for their advocacy, advice, and support.
