Interim Dean Helps College of Law Through Time of Transition

Michael Satz“Fair winds and following seas” is a phrase often used to wish good luck to sailors on their next journey, and one that seems fitting to Interim Dean of the College of Law for the past year and navy veteran Michael A. Satz. Dean Satz took over as Interim Dean June 3, 2013, succeeding Don Burnett who had served as Dean of the College since 2002. Satz had joined the law faculty at University of Idaho as an associate professor in 2006, serving as the associate dean for faculty affairs in 2012. He will remain a member of the faculty and return to full-time teaching in the fall.

Dean Satz received a bachelor’s degree in history and political science from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. He then served as a Surface Warfare Officer in the United States Navy, completing two overseas tours of duty in Japan aboard the amphibious assault ships USS San Bernardino (LST-1189) and USS Dubuque (LPD-8). Satz received his J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School. Before coming to UI, he worked as corporate counsel for Nissan North American, Inc.

While serving as Interim Dean, Satz helped the College through a time of transition, which included the following: he secured approval from the State Board of Education to begin a second year program in Boise and also facilitated the authorization process of the ABA and AALS. In addition, Satz secured an appropriation from the Idaho State Legislature and Governor of $400,000 to fund the second year program.

Satz led the “Focus for the Future” planning process for the College of Law as part of the University-wide initiative. He welcomed our 50- and 40-year class reunion attendees to the Moscow campus in 2013. He saw the College of Law jump 16 spots in the U.S. News & World Report graduate school rankings—the 7th highest gain out of 200 ranked law schools. Satz participated in the “bucking the trend” as the College of Law saw an 11.9 percent increase in applications for fall 2013 and a 7.8 percent increase in enrollment, when most law schools saw decreases. And Satz welcomed noted civil rights lawyer and guest lecturer Morris Dees to the 2013 Bellwood Lecture in Boise and Moscow. “It has been a great year at the College of Law and I am happy that we were able to accomplish so much during my time as Interim Dean” said Satz, “and I am looking forward to working on the continued success of the College of Law and the University into the future.”

Dean Satz has taught courses in consumer law, creditors’ rights and secured transactions, contracts, property security, and critical legal studies, as well as a special team-taught course in architecture and the law. He received tenure in 2011 and was appointed Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs for the College of Law in 2012.
