Locate a copy of an article by searching the UI Library Catalog

The article databases are separate from the University of Idaho Library collections.  We don't own all the articles listed.  If you only have an article citation, you need to see:
Does the UI Library own it?
IF NOT, order it from Interlibrary Loan.
Does the UI Library have the article?
A. Exit the article database and go to the UI Library Catalog.
B. Choose "journal title" in the "Search by" box.
C. Type in the full periodical title (not the article title) which is often found listed after the "Source" or "SO" in the citation.
Title: KEEP A DIARY, REAP COGNITIVE REWARDS.
Source: Psychology Today, Mar/Apr2002, Vol. 35 Issue 2, p28, 1/4p
Author(s): Adams, Julie

D. Click search and look for your periodical title on the resulting list.
E. In the Psychology Today example, #2 refers to our subscription on microfilm.  Click on #1 to see if the UI Library owns the magazine in print and owns the year you need (in the example citation, 2002). 1967 refers to the year the magazine started, not the years we own. You should see a screen like this:

F. This screen indicates that the UI Library owns issues from 1967 to 1989, then from 1992 to the present.  The 1992- indicates we are still getting the magazine. NIC refers to North Idaho College in Coeur d'Alene.
G. Recent issues will be found on the Current issues shelves on the 2nd floor alphabetical by title.
H.  If the article is more than a few months old, try the bound issues shelved by call number on the 2nd floor.  In this example, back issues (bound) of Psychology Today can be found on the 2nd floor at call number Per BF1.P9.  Look on the floor directory to locate the section where the B periodicals are shelved.  Very old issues of some periodicals may be in book storage and should be requested at the Periodicals Service Center (2nd floor) or the Circulation Desk (1st floor). If you cannot find a periodical on 2nd floor, ask at the Periodical Service Center or Information/Reference Desk.
I. If UI has electronic access to the whole journal, you'll see a list something like this.
J. #3 above indicates that we have access to a computer file version of the periodical.  The location is "Internet Resources".  Click on the line number 3 and you'll see a screen like below.
K. Click on the hot link next to "Links" in order to connect to the electronic version of the journal.  You need to use this link because it includes UI subscription information.  If you just go to the magazine's web site, you may not be able to access our subscription.
L.  Another way to look for periodicals that the UI Library owns is to check the Current Journal List.  The journal list only includes periodicals we are currently getting.  If we stopped subscribing, but still have older issues, the magazine won't be listed.  The journal list also does not tell you what years we own.
