The University of Idaho Library Government Documents collection
Almost all of the U. S. Government Documents Collection is shelved in a closed-stacks area in the Library's basement on compact shelves. The documents are arranged according to the classification system designed by the Superintendent of Documents (SuDocs). The staff in the Government Documents office in the Combined Reading Room on the 1st floor of the library will bring you the documents once you find the call numbers from the catalogs and online databases described below. The staff at the Information & Reference Desk will help you locate the information and the necessary call numbers to retrieve the documents.
The majority of the documents in the collection can be circulated for 28 days with one renewal allowed. To check out a document, go to the Government Documents Office during their opening hours, or the Information & Reference Desk during evening and weekend hours. The staff at these locations can approve the circulation request. The documents approved for circulation can then be checked out at the Circulation Desk. Documents must always be returned to Circulation.
Government information published since 1976
U.S. Government publications published since 1976 can be searched electronically in the University of Idaho Library Catalog. Titles published by agencies of the U. S. Government and distributed by the U. S. Government Printing Office to the library since 1976 are listed and available in the UI Library Government Documents collection or online.
The University of Idaho Library, as the regional depository library for the state of Idaho, receives all these distributed publications. Numerous other libraries in Idaho and other states receive a selection of the distributed publications.
For a list of depository libraries in Idaho, see Idaho Depository Libraries
For a list of U. S. depository libraries, see: U. S. Depository Libraries
Not all U.S. Government publications are distributed to depository libraries. To identify post-1976 publications whether they are distributed to libraries or not, use the Catalog Of US Government Publications.
Once you are connected to this database, you may search, by KEYWORD, by TITLE, by SUBJECT or by AUTHOR. More search options are available in the ADVANCED SEARCH. Most of the documents listed in this database can be found at the University of Idaho Library. The SuDocs call number listed in the third column of each title screen is the same call number you would use to locate the item in the University of Idaho library. Links to online full text of documents are shown in the 4th column. From the full record for each document, use the “Locate in a Library” link to identify depository libraries which have the item.
