How do
I find books at the U of Idaho Library?
- To get a list of books available and their call numbers, search the UI
Library Catalog. The catalog can be searched from the box on the Library's home page, or, a more complete
search system is offered from the full
catalog.
- For tips on how to search the catalog, see the full catalog's help screen
or the help for the home page search box.
- After you search and retrieve a list of books, look at the
Status (checked out or
not?)
"library
location" and
call number
in the information about the book. See the examples
of the information you generally get about a book (called the "brief record").
A few location tips:
Books listing a location of NIC (North Idaho College) are not
available in the UI Library. They can be requested using the
"request" button at the top of the brief record screen.
If a book's location is "UI Library Internet Resources," it is an electronic book. You can access it from the
link near the bottom of the brief record screen. The book will not be found on
the shelves. |
- Using the "library location" and the first letter of the call
number, determine on what floor and in which area of the library you will find
the book.

- If you cannot find a book that is not checked out, you can request that the
book be "searched." Go to the UI Library Catalog and bring up
the brief record for the book. Then click on the "request"
button near the top of the screen. After inputting your barcode and last
name, you can request a "hold" and follow the instructions on
succeeding screens. You will be notified when the book is found.
To acquire books not owned by the UI Library:
- Order any book you want that the UI Library doesn't own from Interlibrary
Loan by finding it on WorldCat
first, then clicking on the ILL button, filling out the form and sending it.
Interlibrary Loan will choose the fastest location to order it from. There is no
charge for this service.
- If you want to go to Washington State University in Pullman, you can search
the WSU catalog first
to see if any of the libraries there owns the item.
- To search other local libraries, go to Other Libraries.
