W.C. Cheney Americana Collection Opening on April 19th

President Nellis will be officially opening his time capsule gift from W.C. Cheney on Monday, April 19th,  at 10:30am in the middle of the first floor of the Library.  The exhibit features items from a few of the 17 barrels gifted to the University in 1960.  In accepting the gift, the Regents willingly agreed to the two stipulations Mr. Cheney specified in his March 16, 1961, letter to President Theophilus: that the drums “be stored in a clean dry place, and, NOT OPENED ‘TILL 2010.” After their receipt, the barrels were stored in the basement of the University of Idaho Library where they remained undisturbed until February 2010 when Library staff began processing the collection.  The barrels contained periodicals and artifacts from the 1900s to the 1960s that represent American life.  The display also features pictures of student life from Special Collections and “I” sweaters during the same time period.
