Back in the Good USA at Xmas Time: World War II Holiday Correspondence

Correspondence written during World War II by University of Idaho students then serving in the Armed Forces is featured in a new display in the Library’s Reading Room.

The correspondence is held by the Library’s Special Collections and Archives in its Erwin Graue Collection, Manuscript Group 404. Professor Graue (1895-1994) taught economics at the University of Idaho from 1928 until his retirement in 1965. During World War II, he corresponded with nearly 90 of his former students and carefully preserved the letters, greeting cards, V-mail, drawings, photographs, and birth announcements they appreciatively sent in reply to his letters.

The display opens on December 7, 2012, and closes on January 18, 2013. The Reading Room is located in Room 104 on the Library’s first floor. The Reading Room is open Monday-Friday from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm during the academic year and generally from 1:00 to 4:00 pm during academic breaks. Personal letters from other collections in Special Collections and Archives will be featured throughout 2013.
