Using EndNote with the UI Library Catalog

There are 2 methods for downloading records for books and other materials from the UI Library Catalog into EndNote:

1.      Import filter.  Using this method, do a search in the library catalog, select and save the records desired into a text file on a disk; then, in EndNote, use the File Import feature and the Uidaho filter to import the records from the file into your EndNote bibliography.
Advantage: more powerful and more accurate searching of the library catalog.

2.      Connection file.  Using this method, use the Tools Connect feature in EndNote and the Uidaho connection file to search the library catalog.  Results will automatically be downloaded into EndNote for editing.
Advantage: faster, less steps.

A. Importing references from the UI Library Catalog into EndNote

  1. Installing the import filter
    1. Right click here to download the file UIdaho.enf. Select “Save Link As”.
    2. Place the downloaded file in the \Filters subdirectory for the EndNote program (most usually the location is C:\Program Files\EndNote 9\Filters)
  2. Using the import filter
    1. Search the library catalog
    2. Select each item to download by clicking the box in front of the listing (if you want to download all the items on the page, proceed to step d. below)
    3. If selecting from more than one page, click the “Retain Selected” button near the bottom of the page before moving to the next page.
    4. When finished selecting records, proceed to the “Save Options” at the bottom of the page.
    5. Choose the records to download (“all on page” or “selected all pages”)
    6. Choose the “Download Format” (“Full Record” or Brief Record” only; do NOT select “EndNote Citation” – it doesn’t work correctly)
    7. Click the “Print/Save” button to generate the page of records.
    8. Use “File” “Save Page As” to download a text file of the records to your disk drive (Name the file and choose the location).
    9. In the EndNote program, click on “File” “Import”
    10. Choose the downloaded file from the disk drive where you placed it.
    11. Change the “Import Option” to “UIdaho” (if UIdaho does not appear on the list that appears when you click the down arrow for “Import Option”, click on “Other Filters” and choose “UIdaho” from that list)
    12. Click the “Import” button to complete the process.

B. Using the connection file in EndNote to capture references from the UI Library Catalog

  1. Installing the connection file
    1. Right click here to download the file UIdaho.enz. Select “Save Link As”.
    2. Place the downloaded file in the \Connections subdirectory for the EndNote program (most usually the location is C:\Program Files\EndNote 9\Connections)
  2. Using the connection file
    1. In EndNote, click on “Tools” “Connect”
    2. Select “UIdaho” from the list of connection files that appears. If “UIdaho” is not on the list, click on “Connect”, then choose “UIdaho” from the long list of connection files that appears.
    3. Use the boxes on the search screen to fill in your search terms and click the “Search” button at the bottom of the page.
    4. Fill in the range of available references to retrieve from the library catalog and click the “OK” button.
    5. The result is a brief listing of each reference, which can be edited (please use the EndNote instructions for details). If you want to review the whole reference, doubleclick on it.
    6. Select the references you want to keep and click the “Copy Reference(s) to (EndNote)” button to complete the process.
