A meaningful way to remember...

  • A person
  • A group
  • An occasion
  • A milestone

Books provide lasting tributes.

An Opportunity

There are times when we wish to honor a person or to commemorate an important event. A gift to the library affords an opportunity to do this. Memorial gifts and books are living tributes to the people or events we wish to be remembered, for ideas through them live on.

Gifts as tributes add a richness to the library by allowing the purchase of books and materials needed by library users. Your gift is an invaluable way of supplementing and enhancing the library's regular acquisition program.

Today the University of Idaho Library is the largest library in the state. It has become a vital resource and a focal point for the entire campus community -- supporting and stimulating instruction, research, and service. Your gifts can help ensure its continued excellence.

The Occasion

Gifts to the library mark occasions such as birthdays, graduations, anniversaries, and holidays with special significance. Those honored may have their interests matched by additions to the collection. A memorial gift is most often made on the death of a friend or loved one whose memory we wish to make lasting. Their interests live on through gifts on specific subjects the deceased might have personally selected. Whatever the interests, they can be promoted and shared through a gift to your library.

To Give

If you would like to make a gift, send or bring your contribution to the University of Idaho Library. All contributions are tax deductible to the extent provided by law, and the state of Idaho allows a substantial tax credit. Because of the increasing cost of books and materials, we suggest a minimum contribution of $25.00. A receipt will be issued for filing with your tax return for the current year.

The library staff will make a thoughtful selection and appropriate acknowledgment of the gift. Knowledgeable collection development librarians will select additions to the collections that correspond to topics or subjects that meet the curricular and research needs of the university community. A special bookplate with the name of the donor and the individual honored will be attached to each gift.

As an invaluable way of supplementing and enhancing its regular acquisitions program, the Library encourages the support of the broad community which it serves. Your gift, whether a monetary contribution or one of library materials, will help create a margin of excellence for the University of Idaho today -- and an investment in Idaho's future tomorrow.

Rare Books and Manuscripts

Gifts of historically significant manuscripts or rare publications serve to enhance the library's collections, and are preserved for present and future use in a controlled section of the library known as Special Collections. These donations are mirrors of the past and serve as important research and educational tools.

Earlier gifts to the collection include a substantial Sir Walter Scott Collection; extensive business records of the Potlatch Lumber Company and Day Mines, Inc.; the rare London edition of the Lewis and Clark journals; a copy of Idaho's first newspaper; over 90,000 Barnard-Stockbridge glass and film negatives of the silver mining regions of Northern Idaho; and a variety of other literary and historical sources.

Scholarly Materials

The library welcomes gifts for the general collection which support the teaching and research activities at the University of Idaho. A gift to this category could include sponsoring a subscription to a periodical, journal, or on-line catalogs and information systems. According to the American Library Association, the cost of scholarly periodicals more than doubled between 1989 and 1995. To continue to be recognized as a credible research university, we must continue to offer these research aids to students and faculty.
