Welcome to Technical Services, the department that orders and catalogs all the library's books, magazines, electronic resources and media.
The Technical Services Department also:
- Provides direct assistance to the public, via the Periodicals Service Center on the 2nd floor;
- Labels the physical resources and prepares journals for binding;
- Processes donations of library materials to the library;
- Maintains the online catalog;
- Mends books and journals in need of repair; and,
- Handles the shipping and mail within the library.
The mission of the Technical Services Department is to provide quick and accurate information to all library users, through the online catalog and other access points to library materials by using the most efficient and creative means available.
Cooperative relationships:
Technical Services maintains a cooperative working relationship with every other area of the library. Technical Services consists of five library faculty and twelve staff, who belong to the following units:
Units:
- On the 4th floor, Acquisitions and Cataloging is where books are ordered and entered into the library’s online catalog and into a large international database. Maintenance of the online catalog is a function of this unit, as well.
- The Library’s Gifts unit processes donations of library material, working with donors and with the subject librarians.
- On the 2nd floor, The Periodicals Service Center provides patron-assistance with the use and location of paper journals, as well as binding and marking services.
- On the 1st floor, the Shipping and Mending unit handles the library’s mail and provides mending services.
- Back on the 4th floor, journals are ordered, cataloged and checked in by the Periodicals unit. The Serials unit manages the resources other than journals that are received on a continuing basis. Finally, Electronic Resources are ordered and maintained by another unit.
Each year the department:
- Orders, receives and catalogs 15,000 to 20,000 items;
- Checks in about twice that many magazine issues;
- Binds, mends, and repairs thousands of items; and,
- Answers hundreds of questions for library patrons.
Keeping tabs:
The data maintained by the department undergo continuous correction, enhancement, and conversion. This is done according to accepted international standards for bibliographic records.
