Primary source materials in the Department of Special Collections include personal and organizational records and university archives, rare books, manuscripts, and historical photographs; these and other materials support research into nearly all facets of the history of Idaho and the Pacific Northwest.

Digital Collections

Digital Collections is a continually growing, searchable database that provides access to rare and unique collections to enhance and support research and education at the University of Idaho. The primary subjects include historical Idaho and the jazz collections.

INSIDE Idaho

INSIDE Idaho is the clearinghouse for digital geospatial information for the state of Idaho. This site serves as the mechanism to share data, resources, technologies, and expertise with educational institutions, government and business professionals, as well as Idaho citizens.

International Jazz Collections

The International Jazz Collections is the premiere jazz archives of the Pacific Northwest. Featuring the personal papers of the legendary Lionel Hampton and other great jazz artists and critics, the IJC houses scores, recordings, letters, and photographs to preserve and enable research with primary historical sources.

Government Documents

The Government Documents Department is the Federal Regional Depository for the state of Idaho. The department receives 100% of the federal publications, maps, and electronic data distributed by the Government Printing Office. This comprehensive collection of more than 1.7 million items is free and accessible to all users.

Maps

Located on the northwest corner of the first floor of the Library, our map room contains atlases, extensive topographic maps of Idaho and the United States, historic aerial photographs of Idaho, and much more.

Cheney Collection
W.C. Cheney Collection

In 1962, W. C. Cheney, an inventor from Seattle, WA presented President Theophilus with 17 55-gallon drum barrels on the condition that the barrels be opened in 2010. The year 2010 has arrived and the mystery barrels have been opened.
