Library sponsors Open Access Week events

 

The University of Idaho Library will host Open Access Week, October 21-25. Open Access Week, now in its seventh year, is held worldwide to champion free, unrestricted online access to the results of scholarly research, and the right to use and re-use those results.

Open Access Week events sponsored by the library include:

Monday, October 21: Free Film Screening
Rip! A Remix Manifesto, 7:00 pm, Borah Theater, SU.
“Immerse yourself in the energetic, innovative and potentially illegal world of mash-up media. Web activist Brett Gaylor and musician Greg Gillis (Girl Talk) serve as digital tour guides on a probing investigation into how culture builds upon culture in the information age.”

Wednesday, October 23, Wikipedia Wednesday
Wikipedia Workshop: 9:00-11:00 am, Library Classroom.
“Brush up on your skills or take your first steps towards contributing to the world’s largest encyclopedia. This workshop is for anyone with an interest in Wikipedia. A limited number of computers are available, so you may want to bring a laptop.”

Wednesday, October 23, Wikipedia Wednesday
Idaho Edit-a-thon: 3:00-5:00 pm, Library Classroom.
“Let’s take advantage of the library’s extensive collections related to Idaho and use them to improve Wikipedia’s coverage of Idaho topics! Help will be available for Wikipedia newcomers and veterans alike. A limited number of computers are available, so you may want to bring a laptop.”

Thursday, October 24: Information Session
Opening up the University with VIVO: how the library is using a new semantic-web application (VIVO) as an institutional repository for campus research, 1:00-2:00 pm, Library First Floor.

Tuesday, October 22: Malcolm Renfrew Interdisciplinary Colloquium
Open Access: the new frontier of scholarly research and education (Malcolm Renfrew Interdisciplinary Colloquium), 12:30-1:30 pm, Whitewater Room, Idaho Commons.
