| 1879 | For the traditional Nez Perces, the Fourth was an opportunity to parade in their traditional dress and race horses. Non-traditional Nez Perces were encouraged to honor Independence Day, as observing U.S. holidays was believed to help inculcate the acculturation process. In 1884, the McBeth sisters instituted a church celebration to compete with the traditional Nez Perce celebration; Talmaks, the Presbyterian retreat, still held every summer on the reservation, dates from these early fourth of July gatherings. |
