Woman in the Moon

At first the heat of the moon was so fierce as to kill beasts as well as people. A woman much admired the moon. She wanted him for her husband. She also wanted to know the secret of his great power. So she dressed herself, took a vessel or basket in her hand and an armful of hay or wheat with her. Cautiously went up near to him. She asked him where his real power lay. He had a good wife so was not anxious for her. Jokingly he answered pulling his eye open, it is here come in, she approached he put his hand on her face so they were joined together ever afterward. He said from this (time) on I will never be fierce again. My brother the sun shall travel in day time I in the night. Teaching surprise would be womans power to make gentle. The Nez Perce have a woman as well as a man in the moon.
