Portion of letter from Rev. G.L. Deffenbaugh to Rev. F.F. Ellinwood

Nez Perce Agency, I.T.
Aug. 13, 1885

…I have about come to the conclusion that the best plan will be for me to come on to N.Y. while in the East and have a conference with you by word of mouth. I could thus put you in possession of what information you wish and speak of other matters about which you will need to know, perhaps in the near future and about which no amount of writing could be ultimately satisfactory, perhaps. One of which – a very grave matter in itself – is Agent Montieths endeavor to have the Misses McBeth removed from this Reservation. It may be that the letter he has written to the Dept to that end will be referred to the Board. I should rather give my views of the situation orally rather than attempt to do so in writing. By questions you could draw out the information you might feel the need of in the case…
Yours faithfully,

G.L. Deffenbaugh
