University of Idaho Women’s Center

Records, 1958-1997
1.5 cubic feet

The Women’s Center transferred its records to the University of Idaho Library between 1998 and 2001 (accessions UA1998-009; UA 2001-13).  Jessica Bowman processed them in February 2007.

History

The Women’s Center was founded in November 1972 to benefit the women of the University of Idaho and the community of Moscow.  Its original goals were to increase the number of University women and decrease the dropout rates.  Goals later expanded to include development and sponsorship of programs designed to increase awareness of the status, needs, and problems of Idaho women and to provide informative and educational resources.

The Women’s Center has had four different locations on campus since it’s beginning.  Until 1975, funding came directly from a $.50 fee assessed to every woman student.  It has evolved into the largest and most active women’s centers of the Pacific Northwest as well as one of the oldest in the United States.

Scope And Content

The records of the Women’s Center span the years 1958 to 1997, with the bulk of the material covering the years 1972 to 1980.  Included in the records are photographs, newspaper articles, lawsuits, a rape survey, budget and grant proposals, and various projects concerning the Women’s Center.

Arrangement and Description

Most of the content of this archival group was in labeled folders when received.   Although many of the files have retained their original title, some were changed to clarify their contents.  The organization of the files was rearranged to create a more coherent arrangement.

The first series consists of office files and provides an historical background for the Women’s Center.  It includes publications, advertisements, projects, broadcasts, articles, photographs, videos, and annual records.

The second series is a collection of laws, rights, and statistics.  It includes information on the Alternatives to Violence of the Palouse, expense statements, Affirmative Action procedures, legal statutes, a UI rape survey of 1990, and various lawsuits pertaining to the Women’s Center.

The third series is restricted.  The Head of Special Collections may grant permission for access.  This box contains the original rape survey research forms, summaries of which are available in Box 2.
