The records of the ROTC were transferred to the University of Idaho Library between 1987 and 1988.  Marilyn Sandmeyer processed them in March 2007.

History

The ROTC was established at the University of Idaho in 1916 under provisions of the the National Defense Act.  The War Department authorized the creation of a two-year compulsory course of Senior Division ROTC.  Before 1916, The University of Idaho had a Military Science and Tactics department with Brigadier General Edward Chrisman as the program’s first Professor. Chrisman played a fundamental role at the University and retired after 22 years as a faculty member.

The Military Science facility in Memorial Gym is known as the Chrisman Room.  Participants in the ROTC program can register for up to four credits as the Chrisman Raiders Team, which participates in intercollegiate competition in marksmanship, long distance marching, and physical training.  After successful completion of the requirements of the Department of Military Science program, cadets are commissioned as second lieutenants. The main objective of the Reserve Officers’ Training Program is to develop leadership and management skills in its students.

Scope And Content

The records of ROTC span the years 1942 to 1983, with the bulk of the material covering the years 1950 to 1980.  Included in the records are commencement programs, newsletters, alumni material, personnel reports, newsclippings, and photographs of training exercises.  All branches of the military are represented in the records including the Army, Navy, and Air Force.
