Dakins Company

Records, 1938-1942
1 cubic foot

The records of the Dakins Company are part of the records of Day Mines, Inc., donated to the University of Idaho by Henry Day in 1984 and 1985. Initial processing of this manuscript group was done by Clay Williams in May 1987, with funds provided by the National Historical Publications and Records Commission. Processing was completed by Judith Nielsen in July 1992.

COMPANY HISTORY

The Dakins Company was a mining partnership organized on September 1, 1938, for the purpose of purchasing the stock of the Kanaka Corporation, a California gold dredging operation. The three Dakins partners were Henry L. Day, Henry B. Kingsbury, and Max G. Smith, all of Wallace, Idaho; they had been major holders in the Kanaka Corporation and held notes on that company. Herman Marquadt of Wallace was apparently a silent partner, owning onethird of the interest which appeared in H.B. Kingsbury's name.

Dakins Company undertook dredging operations on leased properties at Wolf Creek, Champion Flats, Indian Creek, and the Sherman claims in the Grass Valley region of northern California. The superintendent was a mining engineer named R.D. MacAfee.

In September of 1939, Dakins sold its Champion Flats lease and the equipment on that claim to the Yuba Gold Recovery Syndicate; and in 1940 sold additional dredging equipment to the Parks Bar Company.

Dakins never showed a profit and was dissolved March 31, 1942, having sustained losses of $51,000 from August 1940 to August 1941.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

Included are, financial statements, correspondence with suppliers, financial ledgers and journals, voucher and check registers, tax returns, insurance records, location notices, leases, mint reports, records of equipment sales and leasing, photographs of dredging operations, and other records.

Related materials can be found in the records of the Kanaka Corporation.
