Who may use interlibrary loan (ILL)?
- Current faculty, staff and students of the University, including the Moscow, Coeur d'Alene, Idaho Falls and Boise campuses, as well as UI Extension faculty and staff may request materials
- Distance Education students residing outside of Idaho will receive non-UI books via UPS and must return them by the due date via UPS, FedEx or priority mail. Overdue fees are assessed.
- All others should consult their local libraries

How do I submit a request for a book or other returnable item?
- Request a UI, North Idaho College or Lewis and Clark State College library book by finding the item in the UI catalog and placing a hold. The book will be retrieved the next day (Monday through Friday) and you will receive email notification to pick the book up at the circulation desk. If you are off campus or are Moscow campus faculty or staff the material will be sent to you through U.S. mail or campus mail.
- Submit your request through WorldCat. When you locate the item in this database and it is not in the UI Library, click the "ILL" icon and fill in your personal information. Then click "submit" to complete your request.
- Use the electronic form [click here] for books. This form has required fields and will be returned if the information is incomplete or unverifiable.

How do I request an article?
- Article citations submitted through a WorldCat database will allow you to use the results of your search in your request form. You will need to fill in your personal information when you submit the request.
- Use the request form [click here] for articles.

How do I request a video?
For WSU videos:
- Fill in WSU video electronic request form [click here]. Fill in required fields. Reservation date will be confirmed with WSU.
- WSU Videos take about 3 workdays to arrive. Requests must be submitted at least 5 weekdays before the need by date.
For all other videos:
- Submit your request through WorldCat. The request is in process immediately. You cannot reserve non-WSU videos for a later or for a specific date.
- Your request will automatically route to potential lenders. If no library can supply the video, your request will be returned to you.
- Do not order popular videos that are obtainable from local video stores. These requests will be returned to you.
- You will be notified by email when the video arrives. Come immediately to the UI Circulation Desk to check it out.
- WARNING: videos have very short circulation periods. Return promptly (do not ship or mail) to the Circulation Desk or Interlibrary Loan office. Interlibrary loan overdue administrative fees apply.
- Videos are fragile. You are responsible for loss or damage.
Note: videos cannot be mailed. This service is available only to Moscow campus patrons.

How much will it cost?
- The library does not charge for normal book requests. FedEx or extra "rush" charges are the responsibility of the requestor
- The borrower is responsible for any fines, replacement costs, or charges for damage levied by the lending institution. Failure to pay will result in loss of library privileges (see also overdue administration fees)

How long will it take to receive the item I requested?
- On average, returnable items take seven working days to arrive and non returnable items take 5 days. It is very difficult to estimate how long it will take for an item to be received. Books and photocopies that are ordered from libraries in the region generally arrive within 2-3 days.

How can I speed up the process?
- Provide a complete and accurate citation. Do not guess on abbreviations: leave as is and we will decipher.
- If you are requesting an obscure item write down as much information as possible, including which institutions may own the item. Note where you found your citation; e.g., PubMed, Compendex, Chem Abstracts, Ebsco, etc.

How will I know when my material arrives?
- Faculty, staff and off-campus borrowers will receive materials through campus mail or U.S. mail
- Graduate and undergraduate students will be emailed or phoned when books arrive
- Photocopies will be sent to the address noted on the request form unless specifically noted otherwise
- The majority (80%) of articles will be posted to a web server. An email notice of availability that provides the URL and password will be sent. The article will be available for 10 days or 5 viewings before it is deleted from the server.

How long can I keep the material?
- The lending library determines the loan period, which averages three weeks. Some libraries allow one renewal, but renewals must be requested before the due date.
[ top ]
What happens if I allow the item to become overdue?
- Renewals must be requested before the due date
- If your material is overdue, you will be sent a notice via email or mail
- You are responsible for providing a current mailing address and email address. Failure to receive overdue notices will not be grounds to cancel overdue administrative fees.
- If your material is one week overdue you will be assessed an administrative fee of $3.00 per item per day with no limit
- If you have been notified that your item has been recalled, you will have two days to return the item. From day three you will be assessed $5.00 per day with no limit. You will also lose interlibrary loan privileges.
- Interlibrary loan is a privilege and a finely developed reciprocal arrangement between libraries, and the University of Idaho Library cannot jeopardize its borrowing relationships by failing to abide by the conditions imposed by the lending library.

How should I return the material?
- Return materials by mail, with the slip attached to the front of the book to: Interlibrary Loan office: University of Idaho Library P.O. Box 442357 Moscow, ID 83844-2357
- Return materials in person, with the slip attached to the front of the book to the University of Idaho Library Circulation desk.
