Three UI students awarded Gilman International Scholarships to study abroad

Tuesday, June 2

MOSCOW, Idaho – June 2, 2015 – Three students from the University of Idaho have been selected to receive the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs to study or intern abroad during the 2015-16 academic term.
Two of the students — Emily Kizer of Coeur d’Alene, a sophomore biology major, and Jordan Kizer of Moscow, a sophomore studying political science — will spend fall semester in Peru. The married pair will be studying together at Universidad de Salamanca Cursos Internacionales en Cusco through the International Studies Abroad program. This immersion program will allow them to expand their understanding of the Spanish language as well as study Quechua, an indigenous language of Peru, and culture and history courses.
Samuel Hermann of Genesee, a senior studying international studies, will be participating in a language and culture program through the Council on International Educational Exchange in Senegal. He will be living with a Senegalese family and participating in a research project.
Catherine Yenne of Nampa, a sophomore international studies major, has been named as an alternate. She plans to study in France through University Studies Abroad Consortium.
“We are honored to have three students receive the Gilman Grant for fall 2015,” said Jill Kellogg-Serna, director of UI’s Study Abroad and Exchange programs. “This grant has made it possible for students to study abroad who may not otherwise have had the opportunity. These experiences will impact them for the rest of their lives, and through their Gilman projects, they’ll bring the experience home to share with others and encourage them to study abroad as well.”
Gilman scholars receive up to $5,000 to apply toward their study abroad or internship program costs. The program aims to diversify the students who study and intern abroad and the countries and regions where they go. Students receiving a Federal Pell Grant from two- and four-year institutions who will be studying abroad or participating in a career-oriented international internship for academic credit are eligible to apply. Scholarship recipients have the opportunity to gain a better understanding of other cultures, countries, languages and economies — making them better prepared to assume leadership roles within government and the private sector. The program is administered by the Institute of International Education (IIE).
