Reference Works
The reference section can be the best place to start your research.

Use reference works to:

  • Get an overview or background information on a topic

  • Get ideas for focusing your own research
  • Find bibliographies of more in-depth sources
  • Find quick facts and statistics
  • Find biographical information
How To Use The Reference Section
The reference section is located on the 1st floor of the library. Because it is a fairly small area, browsing the shelves in the general area of your topic is a quick way to look for relevant material. Books are shelved using the Library of Congress classification scheme. Reference works (both print and electronic) can also be found by searching the library catalog. Remember to make your search terms general as reference works tend to have broad coverage. For example, a keyword search using "immigration" and "encyclopedia" finds a four-volume encyclopedia set covering many different aspects of immigration.

Books
Books may contain a broad overview of a topic or an in-depth exploration of a topic. Books range from popular to scholarly and as with all sources, you should be aware of the author's credentials.

Keep in Mind:

  • Books on a broad topic may contain chapters or essays on your topic. Often these are not indicated by the title. When searching, think both broadly and narrowly.
  • The bibliography in a book can be a great place to find additional sources.
How To Find Books, DVDs and Government Documents

To search for books or DVDs in our library, type your search terms in the box below.  If you type DVD in the box, you will mostly see DVDs in your result list.  Some books may be electronic books only and are accessible through a link in the brief record (which you can get to by clicking on the book title or line number).

Good examples of  a keyword search might be immigrants pacific northwest OR Hmong immigration

Books listed may be located at the UI Library Main Stacks (meaning main shelves on 3rd and 4th floors), the UI Women's Center (in Memorial Gym) the UI Law Library, NIC (North Idaho College, Coeur d'Alene), and LCSC (Lewis-Clark State College, Lewiston).  Books from libraries not on the Moscow campus can be ordered using the "request" button.  Electronic books and DVDs cannot be ordered from other libraries.

When searching for books, you will also find many U.S. Government documents in the list.  Some are available online (look for a link in the "detailed record"). If only in print, request them at the Government Documents office on the Library's 1st floor, or at the Circulation Desk in the evening or on weekends.

A subject search may work well and be more specific. You can see subjects for books listed in the "brief record" for a book or browse a subject list. Examples of subject search terms are: Specific Ethnic Group

  • Norwegian Americans   ALSO USE   Norwegians United States
  • Mexican Americans   ALSO USE   Mexicans United States
  • Hispanic Americans   BUT NOT    Hispanics United States
  • Sweden emigration and immigration

Immigrants to a Specific Location

Selected Books for Immigration

Because you will be looking for books specific to your ethnic group, only a few general titles are suggested below. These are useful because they have sections (i.e. "Belgian Americans") on various ethnic groups. The E184 book section on the 4th floor is a good place to browse.

Articles
Articles are found in periodicals.  Examples of periodicals are magazines, journals, and newspapers. Scholarly (also called peer-reviewed or refereed) journals are one of the primary means of disseminating ideas in academic scholarship.

What are the differences: scholarly journals, popular magazines and trade journals?

How To Find Current Articles
Articles are located by searching for your topic in an article database (sometimes called an article index). First, select an appropriate database from the Library Find Articles page or choosing one of those listed below. After selecting a database to search, type in search terms. Articles are generally more specific than books and may require a narrower search.

IMPORTANT SEARCH TIP:  If you are not getting the results you want from your search:

  • Try different search terms or different combinations of terms
  • Try a different database

Some more terms or phrases you may find useful: anorexia nervosa, binge eating, body dissatisfaction, body image disturbance, body size,  cosmetic surgery, depression (mental), gender,  mass media, obesity psychological aspects, plastic surgery, stereotype (psychology), television advertising, self-perception

Example of an efficient search:

  • (television or media): the parentheses and OR allow you to include more terms in one search
  • The * is a wildcard, so you will find teenager or teenagers
  • AND requires that the concepts of oral history and gay/lesbian sexual orientation are BOTH present in the resulting articles.
  • The quotes require that the words are found as a phrase
  • Article Linker
If the article in a database is not available in full text, click on the link or symbol for “Article Linker” to find out if the library has the journal and/or article available either in print or online or to request a copy of the article by Interlibrary Loan.
  • In EbscoSearch, "gender analysis" or "gender studies" could be used as subject terms with your own keywords to find scholarly analyses.
  • In the Ebsco databases, you can check a limit box to limit to scholarly journals. It reduces your results, but won't eliminate the news or editorial articles that may appear in journals.

Selected Article Indexes for Immigration

Recommended Article Database Titles and Descriptions

EbscoSearch  A good general database of both scholarly and popular articles in almost all subject areas, many full text or with links to full text.  An excellent starting place. You can limit your search to scholarly journals by checking a box under "Limit your results" called "Peer Reviewed (Scholarly Journals)".
Lexis Nexis A full text database with many newspaper articles and radio transcripts included (as well as legal and business information).  You can also search campus newspapers by choosing the tab "Guided News Search" then the pulldown "University News."
More subject specific databases
America: History and Life Citations to scholarly articles about the history of the United States and Canada from prehistory to the present. 1964- present
American Humanities Index A database of mostly scholarly articles, many full text, in American literature, history and the arts.
CQ Researcher  An excellent and reliable source for overviews of many social and ethical topics.  Each week the publication explores a topic in depth.  Broaden your topic to see what is available.  Full text.
Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition Articles focusing on medical and health issues. Use this to explore medical aspects of your topic.  Some are full text.
Health Source: Consumer Edition Use this to get more popular articles focusing on health or medical aspects.  Some are full text.
JSTOR: A collection of the back issues of full text older scholarly journals.  No issues in the last 3 years are included.
Lewiston Morning Tribune Archives Find full text of local news articles back to 1990. To access articles, enter the username "UIL" and password "1011738".
Polling the Nations Gives questions and results of polls on various topics.  You may want to browse the list of topics and choose a broader aspect of your topic.
Psychology and Behavioral Sciences Collection  For mostly scholarly sources that deal with the psychology of gender issues.  Many full text articles.
ProjectMuse: A full text collection of some fairly recent scholarly journals in the humanities and some in the social sciences.
Proquest Newspapers Full text access to articles in 27 national newspapers including the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal.  Less regional coverage than Lexis-Nexis.
Religion and Philosophy Collection A database of mostly scholarly articles, many full text,  covering topics related to religious studies and philosophy.
Sociological Abstracts: Scholarly international index for the broad field of sociology.  Contains other types of publications besides journals, including dissertations and book chapters, but you can choose "journals" by choosing a tab.  Default search is a phrase search so use Boolean "and" to separate terms. Our library will not own all the articles. Use the "Locate article" link to determine if we have access to the article.
Social Sciences Databases More article databases related to the social sciences (especially more scholarly ones) can be chosen and searched from this list.
Other Useful Databases
Google Scholar Google has a specific search that take you to a variety of more scholarly publications (not just articles, but many types of documents).  It is much less defined than the databases above. Some items retrieved are not strictly scholarly. Searching it results in a scatter of publications, all of which need to be scrutinized.  However, it is an impressive resource, sometimes pulling up articles not found elsewhere, old and new.  Sometimes you will see a link called "U Idaho Article Linker" to determine if the UI Library has the journal.

Information on the Internet ranges from the free web to electronic books, journals, etc. that the library pays for. The Internet is a wonderful source for many different types of information. It is important to remember that anyone can publish something on the web and it is critical to evaluate your source carefully. The library's Website Evaluation Criteria  or Applying the CRAAP Test can help you choose reliable information.

Besides doing searches on www.google.com (or Google Scholar http://scholar.google.com)or other search engines, you can use subject lists that have evaluated web sites before inclusion: Librarians' Index to the Internet, lii.org , the Internet Public Library at www.ipl.org, and Infomine (scholarly sources) at http://infomine.ucr.edu/
