Interlibrary Loan Borrowing Policies

Current faculty, staff and students of the University of Idaho may use ILL at no charge. Books and copies of journal articles are the most commonly requested items. Videocassettes, DVDs and CDs, microforms, musical scores, government publications and theses and dissertations can also be requested, with the proviso that some items are non-circulating at all libraries. Reference books, rare books, maps, entire issues of journals, required textbooks for classes, books to place on class reserve and popular videos cannot be requested from other libraries. If you have questions about the borrowing policies, contact the ILL office libill@uidaho.edu or 208-885-6843.

How to request materials

Login to ILLIAD

Books from UI, UI Law, North Idaho College or Lewis-Clark State College are requested through the UI Library Catalog, not through ILL.

To request an item from another library you must first register in the ILLiad system, the interlibrary loan database.

Submit your book request through WorldCat.

Fill in an ILLiad request form. You must fill in a separate form for each item requested.

Most of the article databases link to the interlibrary loan form and fill in all pertinent information when the article required is not available at UI.

Arrival of materials/Notification

Most articles arrive within 24 hours and can be accessed from your ILLiad account when you receive email notification. Books from Northwest libraries will arrive within a week, but those from distant libraries can take much longer. Books will be delivered through campus mail, if desired, to faculty and staff. Students' books will be held at the main circulation desk. Books will be mailed to off-campus students, faculty and staff.

Loan Periods

Loan periods are determined by the lending library and average three weeks. Most libraries allow one renewal, which you can request through your ILLiad account. The due date is noted on the bookstrap. If the book is more than seven days overdue, an administrative fee of $3.00 per day will be assessed. If a book is recalled, it must be returned immediately, and failure to do so will result in a charge of $5.00 per day.
