Race and Ethnicity: A Guide to Materials in Special Collections

Compiled by Erika Kuhlman, August 2001.

Since the civil rights movement of the 1950s and beyond, a growing number of historians, sociologists, and students of those disciplines have lent their pens and podiums to the study of race and ethnic relations in the U.S. Many colleges and universities-including the University of Idaho-have underscored a commitment to racial and ethnic diversity as part of their institutional mission. This list was generated as part of a University of Idaho course offered in the Sociology/Anthropology/Justice Studies Department called Racial and Ethnic Relations (Soc 322). Students enrolled in the course studied resources dealing with racial and ethnic groups in Idaho at Special Collections. Below is a list of relevant manuscript and archive inventories available on our website. In addition, Special Collections has oral histories, secondary resources, small manuscript groups, and historical photographs that may also be useful in researching this topic.
