Genealogical Records in Idaho
Types of Records and Where they are Held
Birth and Death Records
Idaho did not require registration of birth and death records
until 1907. The law governing the registration of births and deaths
was changed in 1911, at which time births and deaths were registered
directly with the state. These are available by writing the Vital Statistics Unit of
the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare. The State office has
records since 1911; for records from 1907 to 1911 write to the
County Recorder in the county where the
event occurred. The earliest recorded birth records for Latah
county are 1907; the earliest death records 1888.
The Latah County Historical Society has
a file of recent obituaries (1980s to present) from local newspapers.
Most of these have been indexed.
The Special Collections Department of
the University of Idaho Library has several compilations of birth
and death records. See the bibliography
for more information.
One major index to birth and marriage records in all states is
the International Genealogical Index amended regularly by the
Genealogical Society of Utah and accessible through its Family
History Library and branches. See address
below.
Marriage and Divorce Records
District courts in Idaho were given jurisdiction in divorce cases
by an act passed by the first Territorial Legislative Assembly
in 1864. Divorce and annulment actions were filed in the district
court in the same manner as other civil cases.
Statewide records of Idaho's marriage and divorce records began
in 1947. For copies write to the Vital Statistics Units, Idaho
Dept. of Health and Welfare. The earliest recorded marriage records
for Latah county are 1888.
Restrictions apply when requesting vital information for other
than your own family. Written authorization from the individual
or immediate relative is often required. There is no published
index for Idaho vital records held by the state.
Census Records - Federal
The manuscript census records for Idaho from 1863-1920 (except
for 1890 which was destroyed by fire) are available on microfilm
at the University of Idaho Library.
Land Records
Land offices kept records of each land entry, including tract
books, and township plat records. These records cover the years
1868-1910 and are on file at the National Archives Field Office
in Seattle and the BLM Office in Boise. The National Archives
in Washington, D.C. has the land entry case files. Records for
the Lewiston Land Office (1874-1908) are on microfiche in Seattle.
Also on file in Seattle are records for the Office of Surveyor
General of Idaho, 1913-1950. See below for addresses.
The custodian of land records on the county level in Idaho is
the county recorder. The originals of these county records are
on file at the local county court house. The earliest recorded
land records for Latah County are 1888.
Probate Records
Records include appraisals, claims, estate cases, fee books, final
accounts, guardianships, inheritance tax records, inventories,
letters, and wills. These records are available from the probate
clerk at the county courthouse. The Latah County Historical Society
holds the probate records from 1888-1908.
Court Records
Courts keeping records of genealogical value are district courts,
and magistrate divisions of the district courts.. Records are
maintained by the clerk of the court at the local county courthouse.
Records date from the beginning of Latah County in 1888.
Idaho Supreme Court cases, 1890-1950, and the territorial supreme
court records are available at the Idaho State Historical Society
and also the Family History Library.
Cemetery Records
The Idaho Historical Society has gathered a number of cemetery
records from throughout the state, but a comprehensive listing
does not exist. For specific information write or phone the Idaho
Historical Society, Genealogy Department. In Moscow information
may be obtained from the Moscow Cemetery District Office which
has lot deeds from 1892 and interment records from 1918; a fire
destroyed earlier interment records..
Immigration Records
By 1924 Idaho was under the jurisdiction of the Spokane office
of the Bureau of Immigration. The port of entry was at Eastport,
Idaho. Eastport records are filed with the Seattle passenger lists
(1890-1957) at the National Archives. These have been microfilmed
but are not indexed.
Native American Records
Records are available for the Fort Hall Agency (1889-1952) and
the Northern Idaho Agency at Lapwai (1875-1964). These are at
the National Archives Seattle branch and the Idaho Historical
Society. The Special Collections Department of the University
of Idaho also has a photocopy of the manuscript of the Nez Perce
land allotments register dating from the 1890s; this lists the
owner of the land and family members. (MG 221).
