Library Resources
Licensed Electronic Resources
Contractual license agreements and copyright law govern the access, use, and reproduction of most of the U of I Libraries’ electronic databases. Users of library-licensed resources must comply with the terms of these agreements by a) limiting their uses to non-commercial, educational, or personal research purposes; and b) not facilitating unauthorized access by others outside of the University community.
For a more comprehensive list of policies regarding electronic database licenses at the University of Idaho Library, see their Conditions of Use and Licensing Restrictions for Electronic Resources.
Where library databases are concerned, these general rules apply:
| YOU MAY: | YOU MAY NOT: |
|---|---|
| Print, download, or quote limited amounts of information (with proper attribution) | Engage in systematic downloading of licensed content (e.g. download all the articles from an online journal issue or all the chapters from an e-book) |
| Email an article to another current University faculty, student, or staff member (unless this practice is specifically forbidden by the license) | Email an article to a person who is not a current University faculty, student, or staff (unless this practice is specifically allowed by the license) |
| Create a link to a journal article on a publisher web site or the Library listing | Post a copy of an article to a University server or personal website (e.g. Canvas, departmental website) |
| Use Course Reserves via the Library to provide access to students | Post a copy of an article directly in an LMS (e.g. Canvas) |
| Share your reviews and summaries of information with citation | Copy and paste or upload articles, e-books, or other electronic resources into AI resources (ChatGPT, Claude, etc.) (unless this practice is specifically allowed by the license). |
