Silver City material culture :the archaeology of daily life

History
Abstract:
The work presented here is a mixture of historical document research and the archaeological analysis of an assemblage collected by the University of Idaho, Laboratory of Anthropology, as part of an archaeological field school conducted in Silver City, Idaho in 1987. In addition to telling a story about white settlement in the West this collection also offers valuable insight into how class and gender helped to shape mining communities. Specifically, this work will focus on the five families who lived and worked at the Idaho Power Building from 1903-1943. The debris discarded by these families represents a sampling of the lifestyle appreciated by middle class citizens of Silver City during a period of local economic fluctuations and turbulent national growth.
