Abstract:
Each year a significant number of high-school students drop out. In order to validate their secondary education, they often take the General Educational Development (GED) tests. Although problems exist for both males and females, the focus of this study was on women who dropped out of high school and earned a GED credential before entering postsecondary education. The problem of this study was that women who are GED graduates encountered numerous barriers as they entered college. Statistically, few GED graduates succeeded in earning a postsecondary degree or credential, and for women, the odds against them were even greater. The women in this study had social programming about their roles as women and carried responsibilities that interfered with being successful students. Some also struggled with their lack of academic preparation. In this multiple case study, the variety of supports that helped female study participants to successfully surmount the barriers in order to persist in college and to earn at least a baccalaureate degree were identified. Additionally, the women identified the transformations that they perceived in themselves.
