Abstract:
This study conducted a mixed methods research design to investigate the effectiveness of a preschool learning-related social skills (LRSS) program in physical education for kindergarten children. More specifically, this study attempted to determine the benefit of a learning-related social skills physical education program on kindergarten children in the classroom setting.;Kindergarten children (N = 38) and their classroom/physical education teachers (N = 6) participated in this study and were assigned into two different experimental groups. Children's social behaviors were assessed by using the Child Behavior Rating System (CBRS) in the classroom setting and the Physical Education Social Behaviors Assessment (PESBA) in the physical education setting for pre-and post-test. Post-interview was also conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the LRSS training program from the teachers' perspectives.;The findings from the results of this study indicated that, in general, children's social skills did not show statistically significant improvements in the classroom setting; however, the target children's LRSS behaviors were improved in listening and following directions, staying on task, and organizing work material behaviors after receiving the LRSS physical education training program. These improvements were also perceived by their teachers. The teachers indicated the LRSS physical education training program can help children to develop appropriate learning related skills in the school setting.;In conclusion, this study contributed to understanding (a) young children's LRSS behaviors and social responsibility can be developed in a physical education setting and (b) how to incorporate LRSS in the TPSR instructional model.
