Abstract:
The problem addressed by this study was the perceptions of nurses that contribute to the insufficient number of long-term geriatric nurses to meet the projected needs for the aging baby boomers in the United States. The purpose of this grounded theory study was to discover a central theory that explains the critical factors influencing experienced registered nurses who currently work in long-term care to choose and then remain working in long term care facilities. The participants included nine registered nurses from the western region of the United States. The grounded theory methodology of Strauss and Corbin was utilized. The results of this study indicate that relationships between registered nurses and residents and the ability to promote quality of care and quality of life are the primary reasons for registered nurses to choose to continue to be employed in long term care. These findings imply that nurse educators need to increase the focus on geriatrics in schools of nursing. Nursing curricula should be reviewed for geriatric content, and as needed revised to reflect integration of geriatric content and geriatric theory courses promoting the care of the elderly.
