Abstract:
Studies of expert retrieval of domain-related information from long-term memory suggest that experts implicitly retrieve information to more adequately solve problems and perform tasks than novices do. Moral judgment expert versus moral judgment novice retrieval of target words from a moral dilemma was compared to see if moral judgment experts could be distinguished from moral judgment novices by their implicit retrieval of target words from the dilemma. Participants were randomly assigned to an implicit instruction group or an explicit instruction group. Participants in the implicit group were given instructions that facilitated implicit retrieval target words from the moral dilemma. Participants in the explicit group were given instructions to explicitly retrieve target words from the moral dilemma. All participants were given a conceptual word-cued association test. Moral judgment experts implicitly retrieved more target words from the moral dilemma than moral judgment novices. Moral judgment experts also explicitly retrieved more target words from the moral dilemma than moral judgment novices. Moral judgment novices explicitly retrieved more target words than implicitly retrieved target words.
