Abstract:
The determination of iron and aluminum, in solutions containing no phosphoric acid or only a very small amount, gives no particular trouble. If ammonium hydroxide is added to a solution containing no phosphoric acid the iron and aluminum will be entirely precipitated as hydroxides; if it is added to a solution containing only a small amount of phosphoric acid part of the iron and aluminum will be precipitated as phosphates and part as hydroxides. The calcium and magnesium, in both cases, will not be precipitated for calcium hydroxide is soluble in water and magnesium hydroxide is soluble in ammonium salts.
