Abstract:
This study follows the researcher-participant's examination of student resistance to feminist pedagogy which revealed constructions of white privilege and the living contradictions of feminism within emancipatory practice. In the tradition of self-study this work began as a desire for improving practice, but moved to expand and push theory as the researcher-participant's summative analysis generated a new lens of perspective. A critical interrogation of feminist pedagogy practice by the researcher-participant in a year long course with in-coming college freshman students provided the site of study described with rich contextual detail. The writing style incorporated alternative or what is referred to as experimental discourse to more appropriately involve the reader in the life world of the study. Analysis provided new ways of seeing practice inhibited by white privilege and a contradictory and ambiguous performance of feminist objectives. New perspective informed by whiteness theory and Third Wave Feminist critique, resulted in an evaluation of womanist caring and the theory of the hospitality of social identity leading to transformative moves for future practice. Finally, the researcher-participant calls for a centering of women of color theorists in education and the academy.
