Abstract:

In the world of large jazz ensemble music, there is a distinct lack of guitar-centric literature. A Collection of Guitar-Centric Compositions for Large Jazz Ensemble was composed and compiled in an effort to feature the electric guitar as a solo instrument within the context of a modern jazz big band.

The four compositions in this collection were written in varying styles, incorporating modern electric guitar pop, rock, and funk sensibilities, along with late 20th century jazz guitar techniques of players such as Pat Metheny, Bill Frisell, Kurt Rosenwinkel, and John Scofield.

Included are scores and recordings for: Hayden, Waltz for Kristen, Finding My Way Back Home, and Banquet Blues. Each of these compositions features the guitar as a melodic, harmonic, and solo instrument. Modern electric guitar sounds are also featured with the frequent use of effects pedals and processors.
