Abstract
In the context of the current national debate on widening income distribution in the United States over the last forty years, this presentation examines the relationship between economic and political stability, and social mobility. Is the American Dream becoming history?

Biography
Ivar Nelson has been a university press director, Foreign Service officer and founder of Bookpeople of Moscow. His interest in social mobility and elites started with his research at Uppsala University and subsequent honors thesis at Harvard College on the peaceful transfer of power in Sweden in the 19th century.
