- During the Triassic Period, 240 million years ago, most of the continental land mass was part of one giant continent that stretched from pole to pole. This geography created an enormous climate system, called the Pangean megamonsoon, that affected climate worldwide. The climate was marked by strong seasonality, especially in precipitation. Geologists have documented the evolution of this climate system using rocks, fossils, geochemistry, and climate modeling. Although we understand many aspects of the climate well, some mysteries remain.
