- With roots in Ernest Boyer’s 1990 signature work, Scholarship reconsidered: Priorities of the professoriate, engagement is a way of teaching and conducting research rather than a separate, siloed activity. It means using outreach and collaborative partnerships to achieve learning outcomes and develop useful scholarship. Many of the university’s largest grant proposals were successful in part because of their strong engagement efforts. Making engagement central to our teaching, research and outreach requires strong leadership, flexible administrative processes, and appropriate incentive structures.
- Biography:
- Priscilla Salant directs the university’s Office of Community Partnerships and chairs the Outreach and Engagement Council. She has over 20 years of experience building connections between universities and their statewide constituents, with a focus on rural economic development. Her work is guided by a core belief that by engaging with statewide constituents, universities produce more useful research and students have better learning outcomes.
