- In the summer of 2012, a group of Computer Science students and faculty met with Marching Band Director Spencer Martin to discuss ways to use Light Emitting Diode (LED) technology in halftime performances. Shows that fall incorporated microprocessor-controlled LEDs placed on the drum line. In 2013, the project expanded to more instruments and wireless control. The hardware has been used in other performances, including dance concerts and the Jazz Festival. Students have been involved in conceptualization and construction of components, providing them with an interdisciplinary experience. The presenters will discuss their experience with the project from arts and sciences perspectives.
- Biography:
- Spencer Martin is director of athletic bands, which includes the Vandal Marching Band. He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the UI in percussion performance and pedagogy. He has served as a clinician, adjudicator, and guest conductor in Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Oregon, Washington, Alaska, and Hawaii. Bob Rinker earned bachelor’s and master's degrees from the University of Idaho in electrical engineering and his Ph.D. in computer science from Colorado State University. He is the last active faculty member who was part of the Computer Science Department when it was founded in 1981. Bob's research interests include computer architecture, reconfigurable computing and embedded systems.
