- Responses to issues affecting interacting human, managed and natural systems often entail large-scale, long-term collaborative science, outreach and education. In practice, projects engaged in what might be termed “big interdisciplinarity” necessarily include simultaneous multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary, transdisciplinary and participatory activities, which together constitute a project’s dynamic “architecture of adaptive integration” (AAI). Regional Approaches to Climate Change (REACCH) is a large ($20M) USDA-funded, multi-institutional project addressing sustainability of wheat production systems under current and projected climates for the inland Pacific Northwest. The talk by REACCH director Sanford Eigenbrode will review the genesis, goals and activities of REACCH, the challenges and successes of the collaboration, and how its AAI is evolving as the project matures.
