Cashing U.S. government checks for Nez Perce Indians at the Indian Agency, Lapwai, Idaho, August 15, 1895. Total amount of first payment $626,222.00. Each Indian received $302.96. Balance of $1,000,000 was to be paid in ten annual installments. Photograph taken at the Indian Agency at Lapwai, Idaho, 14 miles east of Lewiston, during the payment. Persons in picture, left to right: Fred Bremmer, Kendrick; Three Feathers (Mah-tot-wap-tus); Sam Martin, clerk at Agency; Red Horn (Teh-was-in-pilpt); Eddie Conner, half-breed, interpreter at Agency; J. Howard Howe, representing Lewiston National Bank of Lewiston, Idaho.
