Potlatch men use oars to propel a boat through the Clearwater river in a log drive. Attached to this photograph is a paragraph that reads 'backbreaking stamina was the order of the day for these Potlatch oarsmen several decades ago, when all they had to fight the turbulent Clearwater river with was a heavy wooden bateau and eight sturdy arms. in 1949, the bateau was modified to take a small outboard motor; today's modern boats first appeared on the log drive in 1959'.
