Alumni Relations, Association Director Steve Johnson to Retire

Wednesday, April 29

Steve Johnson, director of the Office of Alumni Relations and executive director of the University of Idaho Alumni Association, will retire from his position on July 31. Johnson has led the alumni office and association for the past seven years.
A 1971 alumnus with a bachelor’s degree in education, Johnson says he’ll miss working with his Alumni Relations team, as well as the countless alumni and friends he’s had the privilege to work with during his time at UI.
“It has been my honor and privilege to serve the university that I love and that provided me with so many opportunities,” Johnson said. “The Vandal family is truly a special group of alumni and friends, and I’ll deeply miss working to develop and strengthen the lifelong relationships we have with our alumni."
Johnson has been instrumental in expanding communications to alumni nationally through the Vandal Vibe alumni newsletter, building entrepreneurial business agreements in support of the alumni association, and strengthening the statewide and national mission of the organization.
Among his notable accomplishments during his tenure, Johnson helped establish the Vandal Ambassador Network — a grassroots advocacy group of alumni in each of the state’s 35 Idaho legislative districts. Through Johnson’s leadership, Vandal ambassadors share the mission, vision and priorities of the university among their districts and community constituents.
“Steve Johnson has been a wonderful ambassador for UI, keeping our proud alumni connected,” said University of Idaho President Chuck Staben. “We appreciate his long commitment and dedication to the University of Idaho and to the Vandal family.”
The search for a new director of Alumni Relations and the Alumni Association will begin soon.
Johnson and his wife, Claudia, a former UI employee, have three children and five grandchildren. The couple will continue to reside in Moscow, as well as McCall.
