ASUI Bike Loan Program Provides Eco-Friendly Transportation

Monday, August 4 2008

Aug. 4, 2008 MOSCOW, Idaho – A University of Idaho student program provides the solution for students having to choose between eating for a week or filling up the gas tank. The Associated Students of the University of Idaho and the university’s International Friendship Association allows students to have more eco-friendly transportation with its Bike Loan Program. The program allows students, scholars and their families to borrow a bike for a semester, a year or longer. Most bikes have been donated and have been refurbished. To borrow a bike, either road or mountain, a student pledges to use the bike on a regular basis, and purchase and use a bike lock every time it is parked. The Bike Loan Program asks participants to park bikes only in bike racks. According to Glen Kauffman, the International Friendship Association coordinator, some 300 bikes are in the collection. "Bikes are on a first come first serve basis, and is open to all students," she said. “We encourage people to choose a familiar style of bike and one that fits their body.” Kauffman said the program is mostly for students, with a few exceptions for faculty and staff scholars Participants will need to sign a liability waiver and return the bike before leaving the university. A small deposit of $15 to $25 and a lock in hand is all that is needed to take the new-to-you bike home. The Bike Loan Program is housed in the Poultry Hill Warehouse, 800 Poultry Hill Way, and is open on Sundays from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on non-holiday weekends and by appointment.
