Barnes, chair and professor of naval science at the University of Idaho, has been selected as the institution’s assistant vice president for enrollment management. He begins in the new post on March 1, 2007. Barnes will lead the recruitment and retention efforts at the university, including planning and coordinating enrollment strategies that emphasize the institution’s strengths and meet long-term enrollment goals. “I see enrollment management as a process that begins with advertising and first contact with a prospective student and continues until that student is a contributing member of the alumni,” said Barnes. “I’m committed to making sure that our efforts are integrated and focused on institutional goals.” The university’s Strategic Plan seeks to enhance the number and quality of students that the university attracts, enrolls and graduates, and to attract and retain underrepresented diverse student populations to enhance the depth, breadth and richness of the University of Idaho’s programs and community. “Bruce has clearly demonstrated the ability to recruit, retain and inspire people throughout his distinguished service to our nation and to the University of Idaho as a professor of naval science,” said Provost Doug Baker. “He understands the critical role that enrollment management has in helping the University of Idaho achieve its goals.” Under Barnes’ leadership at the University of Idaho Navy Reserve Officer Training Corps, the program realized a substantial increase in scholarship students and emphasized the academic quality of prospective students. Prior to coming to the University of Idaho in 2004, Barnes served as commander of the 23rd Marine Corps Regiment in San Bruno, Calif. During the course of his military career, he has served in command, operations, recruiting and instructor roles in the U.S. and abroad. He also served as White House social aide for Presidents Carter and Reagan. Barnes is a 1977 graduate of the University of Idaho and will retire from 30 years of military service with the rank of colonel prior to assuming the enrollment management position with the University of Idaho.
