Cash for Books and Books for a Cause

Monday, December 8 2008

Dec. 8, 2008 Written by Alecia Hoene MOSCOW, Idaho – Looking for ways to give back this holiday season? University of Idaho students may sell used textbooks back to the Bookstore during finals week. This simple and sustainable act not only adds a little green to student wallets, but keeps the university green by reducing waste.
  • Get cash back for your used books! In most cases, if a book will be used spring semester on this campus, the Bookstore will pay students 50 percent of the new textbook price, even if the book was purchased used. Last year, the Bookstore paid University of Idaho students more than $800,000 for their used books.
  • Buy-back ensures a greater supply of used books for the next semester, promoting textbook recycling and saving students money.
  • Books that are sold back are reused, meaning that no additional resources are utilized in the production and transportation of new books.
  • Many books used in spring or fall 2009 courses will be kept in stock at the Bookstore, as opposed to being shipped back to the distribution center, then re-ordered. This eliminates the greenhouse gas emissions associated with transporting these books.
  • Buy-back supports the university. By working together, the Bookstore is able to make a $2,000 contribution to support the University of Idaho Sustainability Center.
  • Buy-back is not the only way to recycle your textbooks. Donate your unwanted books to the Books for Africa program run by the Associated Students of the University of Idaho (ASUI) Center for Volunteerism and Social Action. Collection boxes will be located at all three buy-back locations: the main Bookstore, Commons Bookstore and the Wallace Underground Convenience Store. Each year, the University of Idaho donates more than 3,000 books to this program.
