Hatch, dean of the University of Idaho College of Forestry, Wildlife and Range Sciences, has been named to succeed, on an interim basis, long-time Vice President for Research Jean'ne Shreeve. ^^"Chuck is a seasoned administrator with an extensive research background," said UI Provost Brian Pitcher. "He has the experience and energy to tackle this interim task while still providing strong leadership for his college."^^In late November, Shreeve requested the opportunity to return to her own research full time. Beginning Jan. 1, Hatch will serve half time as interim vice president for research and continue half time as dean. He will be assisted by three of UI's most capable research faculty as part-time, interim associate vice presidents - Ron Crawford, director of the UI Environmental Biotechnology Institute; chemistry Professor Peter Griffiths; and Dick Heimsch, director of the UI's Research and Experiment Stations and associate dean in the College of Agriculture. Roger Wallins will continue to lead the graduate studies area.^^"This interim situation will last for approximately the next 18 months to give the institution time to answer some fundamental questions," UI President Bob Hoover said. "What do we need to establish globally competitive research and graduate education programs? How can we better define programs for our interdisciplinary offerings while at the same time support strong programs within individual disciplines? What existing resources and new sources of revenue are available to help us achieve our strategic goal of establishing a globally competitive program in research and graduate studies?" ^^A search committee will be appointed and begin its work early next summer.^^Hatch came to the UI in July 1973 as an associate professor in forest resources. He reached the rank of professor in 1977 and was named dean in 1995.
