Former University of Idaho first lady, Betty Gibb Maley, wife of the late UI President Richard Gibb, passed away on July 10 following a life of lovely demeanor and quiet grace. She served as the first lady of UI during Richard’s tenure as president from 1977 to 1989.
During Richard’s presidency, Betty thrived and embraced her role as first lady of the university. She loved hosting and entertaining at university functions and always made all feel immediately at home and at ease in any situation.
President Gibb lost his battle to cancer in 1992. She later remarried Jim Maley, and they made their home in Moscow.
“We were fortunate to have Betty Gibb Maley as a wonderful ambassador for the University of Idaho for so many years,” said President Chuck Staben. “She will be missed by all in our community and in the Vandal family.”
Her husband, Jim Maley, son Rich Gibb and daughter Connie Gibb Reid, son-in-law Rolland R. Reid II, daughter-in-law, Annie Gibb, grand children Kelsey Gibb of Brooklyn NY, and Jesse Dean Gibb of Mannheim Germany survive Betty.
