Hamp’s Gala Concert is Feb. 21 – UI Music Students Pay Tribute to School’s Namesake

Thursday, February 16 2006

Feb. 16, 2006 MOSCOW, Idaho – Students in the Lionel Hampton School of Music at the University of Idaho have a musical tradition on the Tuesday evening prior to the start of the Lionel Hampton International Jazz Festival. Each year, students present the Hamp’s Gala concert to honor the school’s namesake. This year’s concert is Feb. 21 at 7:30 p.m. in the University Auditorium in the Administration Building. “Lionel always attended the concert, and often joined students on stage to perform,” said Jim Murphy, director of the Lionel Hampton School of Music. “Since his passing, we leave a chair in the front row empty and available for Hamp’s spirit, should he choose to visit.” The concert includes performances by the University Symphony, Jazz Choir and Jazz Band. In addition, outstanding music students will be featured as soloists. “This is an opportunity for the public to hear some of the up and coming artists in the School of Music,” said Murphy. The student performers are nominated by faculty and judged by the faculty as a whole at recitals and convocations. Student soloists at Hamp’s Gala are: •Bryan Fazzari, violin, performing “Miniature Viennese March” by Fritz Kreisler; •Tara Swanson, piano, performing the allegro from “Sonata in B-flat Major, Op. 106” by Ludwig van Beethoven; •Kent Queener, piano, performing “Venezia e Napoli” from “Années de Pèlerinage” by Franz Liszt; •Graduate student Elizabeth Tailleur, piano, performing “Toccata, Op. 15” by Robert Muczynski; •Patrick Davis, tenor saxophone, performing the lento from “Concerto” by Robert Ward; and •Kevin Kovalchik, marimba, performing his original piece, “Sketch for Marimba.” Tickets are only available at the door. Ticket prices are $5 for adults and $3 for students and senior citizens.
