Idaho Supreme Court Chief Justice Linda Copple Trout to Deliver UI Commencement Address

Trout is a UI alumna, graduating with a bachelor of arts degree in English in 1973 and a juris doctorate degree from the UI College of Law in 1977.^^"We are proud to welcome Chief Justice Trout back to our campus," said UI President Bob Hoover. "She has been a consistent supporter of higher education and a loyal UI alumna who has made significant contributions to the state of Idaho, exemplifying the value of a good Idaho education."^^The general commencement convocation will be held at 9 a.m., May 16, at the Kibbie Dome.^^Trout made Idaho history when she was elected in 1997 as the first female chief justice in the 105 year history of the Idaho Supreme Court. She also was the first woman justice on the Idaho Supreme Court, appointed in 1992 by then-Gov. Cecil Andrus.^^Upon graduation from UI, Trout joined the Lewiston law firm of Blake, Feeney & Clark, where she practiced law for six years.^^In 1983, she was appointed to the position of magistrate judge. From 1987 to 1991, she assumed additional responsibilities as the acting trial court administrator for the five counties of the Second Judicial District. In 1990, she was elected a district judge and handled cases in Nez Perce and Clearwater counties. In 1992, she received the appointment to the Supreme Court.^^Trout is a member of the Idaho Bar Association, the Idaho Women Lawyers and the American Inns of Court. She previously has served on the board of directors of the Lewiston City Library, the Northwest Children's Home, the Lewiston YWCA, plus a number of statewide administrative, judicial and bar committees and has taught courses in family law at the UI College of Law.^^Trout chairs the Idaho Supreme Court's Appellate Rules and Judicial Education committees.^^Trout is a director of the Idaho Quarter Horse Breeders Association. She has an 80-acre ranch near Kuna, which she owns with her husband, Kim J. Trout, a practicing attorney in Boise and a 1979 alumnus of the UI College of Law.^^--30--^^mkk/4/7/98-ADM==^
