Junior High Day Winners Announced for Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival

Feb. 26, 1998 JUNIOR HIGH DAY WINNERS ANNOUNCED FOR LIONEL HAMPTON JAZZ FESTIVAL The outstanding junior high school, middle school and elementary students competing at the University of Idaho Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival have been announced.^^The King's Junior High School choir from Seattle, directed by Darla Pumphrey, was named Outstanding Overall Choir. The Horizon Junior High School band from Spokane, directed by Steve Jydstrup, was named the Outstanding Overall Band.^^Other winning entries include:^^LEWISTON Junior High Choir runner-up: Jenifer Junior High directed by Karen Kiepenbrock. Elementary School Choir runner-up: Camelot Elementary School directed by Laurie Karel.^^MOSCOW Junior High Choir runner-up: Moscow Junior High directed by Melissa Kleinert. Elementary School Band winner: Moscow All-City Elementary Band directed by Nikki Crathorne. Elementary School Band runner-up: St. Mary's Elementary School directed by Nikki Carthorne. Vocal Soloist runner-up: Danielle Pals, Moscow Arts Commission Choir.^^SANDPOINT Middle School Choir runner-up: Sandpoint Middle School directed by Jon Brownell.^^SITKA, AK Instrumental Combo winner: Blatchley Middle School directed by Mike Kernin.^^ALDERGROVE, BC Vocal Soloist runner-up: Ashley Summers, Aldergrove Community Secondary School.^^PENTICTON, BC Woodwind Soloist winner: Erin Miller, Princess Margaret Junior Secondary School.^^BELLEVUE, WA Middle School Band runner-up: Bellevue All-City Middle School Band directed by Joe Philips and Susan Key. Brass Soloist winner: Drew Pierson, Bellevue All-City Middle School Band. Rhythm Section Soloist winner: Andrew Peate, Bellevue All-City Middle School Band.^^CHATTAROY, WA Middle School Band runner-up: Riverside Middle School directed by Dan Carlson.^^GARFIELD, WA Junior High Band runner-up: Garfield-Palouse Middle School directed by Ruth Vertrees.^^PULLMAN, WA Elementary School Choir winner: Jefferson Elementary School directed by Jan Patrick. Elementary School Choir runner-up: Franklin Elementary School directed by Laurie Caraher. Vocal Soloist winner: Haley Hudson, Lincoln Middle School.^^SEATTLE, WA Middle School Choir winner: King's Junior High School directed by Karla Pumphrey.^^SPOKANE, WA Junior High Choir winner: Northwood Middle School, directed by Michael Smith. Middle School Choir runner-up: Mead Middle School directed by Dennis Larsen. Junior High Band winner: Horizon Junior High School directed by Steve Jydstrup.
