Lionel Hampton International Jazz Festival Student Competition Winners for Feb. 22

MOSCOW, Idaho - Student vocal and instrumental groups from Shoreline, Wash. and Spokane, Wash., earned outstanding honors at the first day of the 2006 Lionel Hampton International Jazz Festival at the University of Idaho. King’s Junior High School from Shoreline, Wash., earned Outstanding Festival Choir honors for the second year in a row, and Northwood Middle School from Spokane, Wash., played their way to the Outstanding Festival Band award. Elementary, middle and junior high schools students from throughout the western U.S. and Canada were the focus of the first day of student competitions at the 39th annual Lionel Hampton International Jazz Festival. The young musicians performed for a group of adjudicators and top scoring groups played later in the day at the Potlatch Outstanding Young Artists Concert in the Kibbie-ASUI Activity Center. The first day of the jazz festival also featured clinics by jazz artists performing at the festival, including the Freddy Cole Quartet, pianist Eldar Djangirov, trumpeter Bryron Stripling and vocalist Roberta Gambarini. The young musicians performed with jazz musicians Kuni Mikami, piano: Christian Fabian, bass and Wally “Gator” Watson, drums.
